  • Top with two slices of smoked salmon per bread slice.
  • Roll the bread ‘sushi-style’ into two tight rolls. Slice into three pieces and push back together into a roll.

We’re celebrating our 50th Anniversary!

1971 – 2021

A milestone year has arrived for Coupland’s Bakeries. 2021 is the year we turn 50 years old!

That’s 50 years of baking fresh, great tasting, quality goods for our loyal customers. 50 years partnering with local growers and producers to ensure only the finest and freshest ingredients are used and 50 years as a New Zealand owned and operated business.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years since our founder, Ray Coupland, started baking pies at the back of his dairy selling them over the counter and catering them to nearby businesses in Timaru. Realising the potential of baking pies and catering, Ray expanded the business and built a bakery in Timaru wholesaling to Mid and South Canterbury. The business continued to expand, and the opportunity arose in 1979 to purchase a hot bread shop in Christchurch. From there, Ray purchased Christchurch Pie Manufacturer, Stevenson’s Pies and then the main Hornby factory and store opened in 1995.

50 years on and Coupland’s is no small family affair. We have 25 stores nationwide, sell millions of cookies, pies and loaves of bread each year, and employ over 450 staff. We have a proud history of providing great tasting food at our everyday value prices making it easier for you to get more for less.

We couldn’t have made it to today without our loyal customers and their families who have supported us from the start – you have been an essential part and ultimately part of our team. That is why we want to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with all of you. Keep a look out for our celebratory events to come!

50 years together, thank you!

What memories do you have of Coupland’s Bakeries? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below!
