TEAM COUPLAND’S TAKE THE WIN!

Team Coupland’s have started the 2020 cycling season with an action packed victory at Lake Wairarapa.

On Sunday 11th October, Madi Hartley-Brown and Tom McCallum, raced the annual Lake Wairarapa Cycle Challenge. This is a 80km event around the beautiful Lake Wairarapa, that starts and finishes in Featherston.

The conditions were windy but fine and the team set off down the lake side in the main group. Unfortunately Tom had some bad luck hitting a big pothole that caused him to lose his drink bottle and broke his gears. He was then stuck in a huge gear for the rest of the race.

Madi started testing the group in the first 10km throwing in some fake attacks and Tom saw a small slowing of the group and attacked off the front. He went solo for the next 15km before getting swallowed up by what was left of the peloton just after the first small climb of the day.

After this left hander, the cross winds picked up and the team stayed close to the front in order to stay out of trouble. A small solo move went up the road and Madi rode hard to bride over to the gap. He then pushed hard for the next 25km before attacking the other rider up the last climb and riding solo to take our teams first victory for the new season.

A huge Congratulations to the team for a great start of the season! We’re looking forward to following Team Coupland’s races in the weeks to come especially the Tour of Southland kicking off on the 1st November.
