The Great Kiwi Roadie List

So you’ve booked the leave, cracked open the piggy bank and are ready to go – but where?

New Zealand offers a plethora of fun activities and sights to see, and what better way to explore than a classic kiwi roadie. From Invercargill to Rotorua, we’ve put together a list of just a few of our favourite spots and activities – from locations with a Coupland’s store of course!

Tauranga, Rotorua & Hamilton

  • You can’t visit Tauranga without heading up Mt Maunganui! After a approximate 40 minute walk you’ll be rewarded with stunning views at the 232 metre-high summit.
  • Rotorua is home to geothermal wonders, where you can relax and rejuvenate. Alternatively, get your adrenaline pumping on an eco-friendly zip line.
  • Head to Hamilton for some flora and fauna – they’re known for their beautiful gardens. It’s free entry, however there are guided tours should you want to explore a little more.

Marlborough

  • Blenheim is the gateway to vineyards in Marlborough, so why not explore one of their many wineries on offer? Alternatively, head to the Omaka Aviation Museum, which houses Peter Jackson’s collection of aircraft.
  • Nelson/Richmond is the place to be for car enthusiasts! Home to the Classic Car Museum, it hosts over 150 classic cars. While you’re there, make sure to check out their stunning beaches, and the Abel Tasman National Park.

Canterbury

  • Canterbury is the perfect base for exploring all the local townships in the region. A few stand out road trips include Akaroa, a small town on banks peninsula, home to the rare Hector’s Dolphins. To the west of Christchurch is Tekapo and Mt Cook National Park, which hosts the highest mountain and the Tasman Glacier. In Christchurch, the Botanical Gardens are a must visit.

Otago & Southland

  • Timaru is known for it’s beautiful historic architecture. While you’re there, make sure to check out Caroline Bay beach and see the Little Blue Penguins. It’s also where Coupland’s originated – Ray Coupland started selling his pies at the back of his dairy in Timaru back in 1971.
  • Oamaru is infamous for being the Steampunk Headquarters of NZ – make sure to check out their musesum of quirky exhibits. Just down the road are the Moeraki Boulders, large spherical boulders that make for great exploring.
  • If you’re in Dunedin make sure to take a trip to Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle! You can even stay in their accommodation should you wish. Dunedin is also home to the Royal Albatross Center.
  • Another city for petrol-heads is Invercargill, home to Bill Richardson Transport World and the Classic Motorcycle Mecca. Invercargill is also the gateway to exploring Stewart Island, which boasts beautiful walking tracks and local wildlife.

Kiwi Road Trip food ideas

There’s nothing better than hitting the road to explore all the beauty New Zealand has to offer. From the taking in the captivating brilliance of Milford Sound to Kayaking in the Coromandel, we really do have everything right here in our back yard. What better way to see it all than by hitting the road? Below we’ve taken you through a couple of our favourite ways to keep those hungry tummies satisfied with some kiwi road trip food ideas.

First things first; COFFEE! Start your road trip right with a coffee in hand – and do it in style with a stunning NZ themed reusable coffee cup. Simply spend $25.00 including 2 x 2L White Milk & receive a free Kiwi Roadie Coffee Cup.*

Secondly, the food. When packing for for a road trip, it’s important to think about meals and snacks that are going to keep well for long periods of time and don’t require cooking or reheating. Bonus points given if there’s little mess or crumbs!

Snacks:

  • Biscuits – we recommend our Kiwi Delight Biscuits. A classic oat biscuit packed with chewy jellies, chocolate chips, raisins and peanuts, everything you need for an energy hit – perfect for those long trips. They come packaged in a resealable bag so they make for easy storage. We also find they hold themselves together very well, meaning little mess after!
  • Fruit cake – it isn’t just for Christmas! Whilst very on theme for a December roadie, fruit cake is a great snack for road trips. Fruit cake is known for having an extremely long shelf life, with the fruits in it helping to keep it fresh. You can’t go wrong with a traditional fruit cake (iced or uniced), they’re moist and buttery, filled with fruits and aromatic spices. Or if you’re after something lighter, try our Light Fruit Cake – it has the traditional flavour known and loved without the weight.
  • Muffins – not a fan of fruit cake? Our Muffins are perfect for providing sustenance between meals. With 6 flavours to choose from and super easy to eat, they’re a hit with kids in particular.

Meals

  • Bacon & Egg Family Pie – A tried and true kiwi icon. Made with whole eggs and succulent diced bacon, all wrapped up in golden pastry. Yum! Bacon & Egg Family Pie makes for a great lunch or tea on the road. Simply heat it up before you leave, let it cool, cut it up into serving sizes and pack away in an air tight container. This pie holds itself together great and tastes equally as nice cold or warm, making it a road-trip must have. Eating it cold also helps hold the pie together better, meaning less crumbs and mess. Have a larger group to feed? Check out our Jumbo Bacon & Egg 1kg Pie.
  • Home-made rolls. The beauty of these is that they’re fully customisable. Think ham & cheese, BLT, chicken & cranberry… the combinations are endless! We recommend packing your fillings in a separate container and assembling them fresh when you take a break. Or, if you’re planning on eating them early on in your trip make them the night before or morning of and wrap air-tight for a super easy fresh lunch or dinner. We have a multitude of options from Dinner Rolls to Cheese Rounds, check them out here.
  • If all else fails, you can’t go wrong with a hot pie. Delicious (albeit messy!) it’s a classic for a reason.

All about Our Great Kiwi

Roadie Coffee Cups

Reusable | Recyclable | NZ MADE

Our Great Kiwi Roadie Coffee Cup promotion is focused all on New Zealand, our beautiful backyard and encouraging people to get out and explore it. We’re proud to say that our Great Kiwi Roadie Coffee Cups are designed and made right here in New Zealand.

Reusable & Recylable

It’s estimated that 295 million disposable cups are used in NZ each year. Our Coffee Cups are made from a food-grade polypropylene, a plastic that can be easily recycled at the end of it’s life and made into other consumer goods. The lids are made from Elastomer. At the end of your cups life, both the cup and lid are fully recyclable.

Our Great Kiwi Roadie Cups can be recycled in your regular recycling bin. However, as the lids are a special softer plastic they need to be recycled by a specialist recycling company. If your local council does not offer this service, lids can be sent back to our supplier and used to create something new – more information on that here.

NZ Made & Designed

In addition to being fully reusable and recyclable, our Great Kiwi Roadie Coffee Cups are made and designed right here in New Zealand. Our four cup designs were created by two incredible Kiwi artists – Greg Straight (Straight Coffee and On The Grind) and Glenn Jones (National Parks and Man Cave). Make sure to click on the links to check out more of their amazing work.

Coffee cup care

Our Coffee Cups, as the name suggests, are perfect for coffee! They’re not intended for hot beverages over 80 degrees Celsius as the cup may be too hot to hold. For reference, a standard milk coffee is 60-70 degrees Celsius. Cups are top-drawer dishwasher safe, however regular dishwasher use can impact the look of your cup over time. Hand-washing your cup is less abrasive so will be less detrimental to the artwork over a longer period of time. Your coffee cup can be placed in the freezer

Where will your cup take you?

We want to encourage people to get out and explore all the beauty New Zealand has to offer, and what better way to do that than with a hot coffee and a roadie!? Share your photos of your coffee cup out and about and you could be in the draw to win a completed set of the Great Kiwi Roadie Coffee Cups!
